1. Read the following passage and answer the given questions below: [15]

The idea that coffee is bad for heart pops up periodically. It was found that regularly drinking very strong coffee could sharply increase cholesterol levels. Researchers even isolated fatlike chemicals, cafestol and kahweol, responsible for the rise.

It turned out that the European brewing method—boiling water sits on the coffee grounds for several minutes before straining – produces high concentrations of cafestol and kahweol. By contrast, the filter and percolation methods remove all but a trace of these chemicals. Moreover, the studies involved large amounts of coffee—five to six cups a day. Moderate coffee drinkers down only two cups. Research has also shown that regular, moderate coffee drinking does not dangerously raise blood pressure. And studies have failed to substantiate fears that coffee might trigger abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) in healthy people.

“For heart disease, I think the issue is closed,” says Meir Stampfer, an epidemiologist at Harvard who has studied many aspects of coffee and health. “Coffee drinking at reasonable levels is unrelated to heart risk.” Evidence suggests that coffee may help fend off Parkinson’s disease. A 30-year study of 8000 Japanese-American men found that avid coffee drinkers had one-fifth the risk of those who didn’t drink the brew.

Scientists at Massachusetts General Hospital, USA, found indirect evidence that Caffeine- the habit forming stimulant in coffee – may actually combat Parkinson’s disease. The caffeine seemed to protect mice brain cells from depletion of the nerve chemical dopamine – the problem underlying Parkinson’s disease in humans. However, these are preliminary findings; human studies have- not consistently supported caffeine’s protective role.

The studies on coffee and cancer have focussed on three organs – and are reassuring. You may remember a brief coffee scare in the early 1980s when a single study linked coffee with pancreatic cancer. A false alarm: Many studies since then have shown that the association is either extremely weak or non-existent. If there’s a connection between coffee and bladder cancer, it possibly applies just to coffee junkies. A reanalysis of ten European studies found an increased risk only among people who drank ten or more cups a day. And studies show that coffee seems to have no adverse influence on the risk of colon cancer.

Caffeine is such a powerful stimulant that the International Olympic Committee and the National Collegiate Athletic Association set limits on how much can remain in the blood during competition. In addition to boosting physical endurance, caffeine increases alertness and improves mood. The buzz may come at a price, though. People who drink more than they’re used to may become restless and unable to sleep. Moreover, it’s possible to become physically dependent on caffeine in days.

The question now arises: how much to drink? Those with heartburn and anxiety may want to see if cutting back coffee improves their condition. For most people, however, there’s virtually no risk in consuming up to three normal cups a day. Harvard’s Stampfer tries to keep his coffee drinking irregular enough to avoid habituation: “That way, I can get a buzz when I feel like it.”

B. Answer the following questions briefly. [5x1=5]

i. In what respect does coffee harm human heart? How?

  • Ø Coffee can harm the human heart by sharply increasing cholesterol levels, especially when regularly drinking very strong coffee. The fatlike chemicals cafestol and kahweol found in strong coffee are responsible for this rise in cholesterol levels.

ii. What is the finding of latest researches about coffee and human heart?

  • Ø The latest research findings suggest that regular, moderate coffee drinking does not pose a dangerous risk to the human heart. Studies have failed to substantiate fears that coffee might trigger abnormal heart rhythms or raise blood pressure in healthy individuals. Therefore, at reasonable levels, coffee drinking is unrelated to heart risk.

iii. What problem causes Parkinson’s disease? What is the role of coffee in this respect?

  • Ø Parkinson's disease is caused by the depletion of the nerve chemical dopamine in the brain. Coffee, particularly its caffeine content, may play a role in combatting Parkinson's disease. Preliminary evidence suggests that caffeine can protect mice brain cells from dopamine depletion. However, human studies have not consistently supported caffeine's protective role, and more research is needed.

Subject: Urgent Need for Improved Garbage Management in Kathmandu Valley

Dear Editor,

I am writing to draw attention to the critical issue of garbage management in the Kathmandu Valley. The current state of waste disposal in our beloved city is a matter of grave concern and demands immediate action from both the authorities and the public.

Kathmandu Valley, home to millions of residents and a popular tourist destination, is struggling to cope with the ever-increasing volume of garbage. Overflowing landfills, littered streets, and inadequate waste collection systems have resulted in unsightly surroundings and a deteriorating environment. The health and well-being of the citizens are at risk as unmanaged waste becomes a breeding ground for diseases and pollutes our air, water, and soil.

It is disheartening to witness the lack of effective initiatives and coordination in managing this crisis. The need of the hour is a comprehensive waste management plan that includes efficient waste collection, recycling facilities, and awareness campaigns to promote responsible waste disposal practices among residents.

I urge the concerned authorities to prioritize and allocate sufficient resources to address this pressing issue. We need strict enforcement of waste management regulations, regular monitoring of waste disposal practices, and collaborative efforts between the government, private sector, and citizens to achieve a cleaner and healthier Kathmandu Valley. It is high time we take collective responsibility and actively participate in efforts to create a sustainable and clean environment for ourselves and future generations. Let us not allow our city to drown in its own waste, but instead, let us work together to restore the beauty and purity of Kathmandu Valley.

Sincerely,

Hemant Raj Pandey

6. Write an essay on the impact of globalization on the process and process of education in Nepal. [10]

The Impact of Globalization on Education in Nepal

Globalization, with its far-reaching effects, has significantly transformed various aspects of society, including the field of education in Nepal. Over the past few decades, Nepal has witnessed a notable shift in its education system, influenced by global trends and advancements. This essay aims to explore the impact of globalization on the process and content of education in Nepal.

One of the most noticeable impacts of globalization on education in Nepal is the introduction of new teaching methodologies and learning approaches. With the availability of technology and increased connectivity, educational institutions have embraced digital tools and online platforms to enhance teaching and learning experiences. This has led to a shift from traditional chalk-and-board classrooms to interactive multimedia-based learning environments. Students now have access to a vast array of educational resources, allowing them to explore diverse perspectives and acquire a broader knowledge base.

Furthermore, globalization has facilitated greater cultural exchange and exposure in the education sector. Nepalese students now have opportunities to study abroad and experience different educational systems and cultural contexts. This exposure helps foster a global mindset and cross-cultural understanding, preparing students for the challenges and opportunities of the globalized world. Additionally, the influx of international educational institutions, collaborations, and exchange programs has contributed to the diversification of educational options in Nepal.

However, globalization also presents challenges in the Nepalese education system. The emphasis on standardized testing and the adoption of Western educational models have created a disparity in access and quality of education. Rural areas and marginalized communities often lack the resources and infrastructure necessary to keep pace with global educational trends. There is a pressing need for equitable distribution of resources and the integration of local cultural values and knowledge into the curriculum to ensure inclusive education.

Conclusion, globalization has had a profound impact on the process and content of education in Nepal. While it has brought numerous benefits, such as technological advancements and cultural exchange, it has also posed challenges in terms of access and equity. It is essential for policymakers, educators, and communities to strike a balance by embracing global influences while maintaining a strong connection to local contexts and values. This will enable Nepal to harness the potential of globalization in education and empower its students to thrive in an interconnected world.
